There are a myriad of ways to massage a body. As a friend said to me, “You can have a fluff and buff kind of a massage which is basically ‘a get in, do what needs to get done, and then get out’ kind of massage or you can have a deluxe, finely attuned to listening to your body massage by Donna Housh. Oh my, there’s a difference!”

A “fluff and buff” is a relatively basic massage, usually known as a Swedish or deep tissue massage. Clients often have a muscle pull, or an ache, and the massage therapist takes care of that particular difficulty.  These type of massages are a more physically based solution, rather than intuitively sensing into the body to relieve the difficulty.

Each type of massage has its place. One is not necessarily better than the other.  Just very different.  For example, if you were running a Marathon, you might like the “let’s take care of this particular muscle or tendon, and let’s get back into the race!” kind of massage. If you are a busy parent or professional, you might like more of a slow down and relax kind of massage.

I would like to talk about a different way of massaging the body.  It is extremely nuanced, and allows the body to slowly unravel, which usually takes more time. The biggest difference between the two types of massages is that, in the first type, what I’m calling the “fluff and buff,” the massage therapist and the client decide what to work on.

In the second type of massage, which I call Body Listening/Whispering, you allow the body to tell you what work “needs” to be done. The body is listened to, heard, and supported in its unraveling of contracted muscles and whatever else needs to be decongested.  The massage therapist is not in control, the body is, and if given a chance, will say exactly what it needs to feel better, on oh so many levels…physically, emotionally, mentally.  Bodies want to be heard and respected and invited to open, not be commanded or bossed around.

“Ponderment” is a word I created and it’s definition is: a thought to ponder upon in this moment.  My favorite ponderment is:  Freedom is actually a bigger game than Power.  Power is about what one can control. Freedom is about what one can unleash. I surrender to the reality that change is integral not only to my life, but to all Life.  When looked at from the viewpoint of my essence, I can see that my fear or any adversity that I am facing will disappear like all illusions.

So in view of this particular ponderment, I would like to move forward and use this in context in regard to the body.  What happens when a body, which is our vehicle to use in this lifetime to get us from one place to another, to feel and sense deeply, says to us — uh no, not one more step.  Obviously, there are varying degrees to this “not one more step.”

But are you at the point of being “bone weary” kind of tired?

Do you feel as if you’re “pushing the river upstream, instead going with the flow?”

Have an aching back and can’t bend down, or have to put your socks on from a sitting position?

Do your hips throb and creak so when you stand up from a sitting position it takes a couple of steps at least to walk without a limp?

Do you have to turn your whole body in the car seat because you can’t turn just your neck to get into a parking space?

Then I would venture to say you have lost a bit of your power to control your body. Hmm, such a ponderment.  Perhaps freedom and “unleashing yourself” rather than “powering through” might be an easier and better way to “BE!”

It is understood by most of us that if we work and work and work, we’ll most likely be a bit stressed and tired out. If we do this physically, work-out, work-out, then work and work and then take care of the family, spouse and children, we will most likely Power Through then WEAR DOWN.  We do not live this life unscathed by fear or adversity and your body will take the brunt of this toll.

However!!!!!  Support can be found through a “Body Listening/Whispering ” session.  First the body is listened to through my hands and then we “talk back to the body” through my hands and I quietly talk [and murmur to it], inviting the body to “say” what it needs. This is on a completely different level of hearing. It flows from the soul, to the heart, into the cells and tissue and muscles and tendons.  I do not decide what “to do,” the body tells me “what it wants.” So when there are questions and concerns in regard to the body, these can be listened to and for and the body can be readjusted energetically and physically and returned to greater fluidity!  When the “Body” (and I emphasize “Body” because it does seem to be it’s own entity) is happy your essence is less involved in “holding itself together” and the Body feels less under siege  It can then be invited and used to create freedom…then it can then be “off to the races” once again.

Come, we will listen together.  It is a team effort…you, me and your Body. Whatever your body and you need, “we” will hear and our essential oils will support the process.  Ahhhhh, to be FREE, To UNLEASH the best of you and your body.  How much Fun!

The Emergency Essential Oil Kit is great for You, the Family, and the Household. Every household should keep an Emergency Essential Oil Kit in the ready. Not only do the oils smell pleasant to the senses, they often are and can be used to ease an everyday difficult situation. They can calm, ground, lessen anxiety, seal cuts, heal and help one to feel renewed. If you are new to essential oils or a bit rusty, this selection of lavender, orange, and clary sage will keep you and your family in very good stead.  These oils are easy and simple to understand and apply with the description and explanation of each oil included in the kit.

Let’s  begin with lavender oil:

Lavender has non-ending universal applications and universal uses.  It vibrates in the musical key of A.  It affects the 6th chakra, which is known as the pineal gland or 3rd eye  and vibrates in the color of indigo.

Lavender refreshes and cleanses the air.

Lavender can be used to seal burned or cut skin from the inside out. Clean the burn or cut, drip lavender oil directly over the wound, there will  be a wee  bit of burning, then wrap in gauze and wrap again with adhesive. Amazingly the skin really does seal from inside and the wound closes.

Lavender can be used  for weakness and swelling of limbs. Great for cramps and cramp related headaches. Lavender works fantastically well for ear aches.  Put a few drops in palm  of hand, use a q – tip and twirl into the oil on your palm, place tip very carefully to inside of ear, swirl slowly and very carefully.  It will feel warm, but earache will clear! Yay!

When lavender is inhaled, it is calming, but can also be stimulating so orange oil is better for sleeping. Lavender is known as an antidepressant  and an anti-convulsive.

Let’s move onto Orange Peel Oil:

Orange Oil is well known as the “happy oil!”  It assists the 2nd chakra, stimulates creativity, offers energy of courage for the heart, so happy, joyous, counters the emotion of worry, allows a lightness of spirit!

This oil is wonderful to use with children to calm, and it also can be very safely used for pregnant women since it supports the fetus. It is the only oil to use for pregnant women since oil goes through the skin, into tissue and muscles and then into bloodstream.

You can place a few drops anywhere on Body, wrists,  or a concentrated energy marma point, and particularly near the collarbone, around heart area. Smell deeply, enjoy the relaxation.

Orange peel is considered a digestive and helps digestive processes including the kidney and gallbladder. Can place a drop on sugar cube.

Don’t forget, you can inhale it as an antidepressant and nerve sedative. Place a few drops in Palm, rub palms together and inhale. Ah the relief is palpable!

The last oil included in the kit is Clary Sage.

Clary Sage is distilled from the flowering tops and leaves of Salvia Sclarea.  It is known to assist in relaxation, depression, emotional stress and nervousness.

Clary Sage is superb oil for grounding yourself. Hyper-vigilance can also be brought down a few notches because it supports the central nervous system. It is also helpful for adrenal support and to strengthen the kidneys and stomach.

Clary Sage can be used for aging skin for people over 50 to regenerate the skin and reduce wrinkles. Use Vitamin E as carrier oil and add a drop of clary sage, apply gently. It is also helpful for hot flashes for people who use steroids, “going through the change” or the elderly who can heat up unexpectedly. A little oil in your palm, then rub bottom of feet.

Since clary sage is an oil that has a scent, sometimes you need to be acclimated to it, or acquire a ” taste”for it. The placement of oil is important. A suggestion is to use a few drops behind the knees, down to either side of the ankles known as kidney points. This will really bring yourself down a few notches so you can “Just Be.” Ahhhh, big sigh, finally!

Essential Oils are truly magnificent, they have so many uses and varied applications and after 25 years of using them in my massage practice, I am in awe of their nuanced affects with on all levels – the body, physical, emotional, vibratory, with chakras, glands, and organs. They can invigorate, calm down, lift up, soothe.  You will see how more of your True Self gently emerges after using oils.

The oils that are offered in the Emergency Essential Oil Kit are H.E.B.B.D. Certified. I have written about the necessity of having certified essential oils, but this can not be stressed enough, so I shall include a small repeat. The oils which are in the kit are labeled H.E.B.B.D.  This means that they have been certified by The Scientific Institute of Aromatology.  This certification label indicates that each essential oil guarantees the origin and exact nature of the oil and includes the exact botanical species, the producing organ and the biochemical specificity. This means they are botanically and biochemically pure.  It is most important to understand they have not been cut with other substances, rectified, deterpened, adulterated and have no synthetic additives. They are considered pharmaceutical grade and need to be respected, and can be considered as medicinal.

It is my pleasure to offer an Emergency Essential Oil Kit. I am happy to share and answer any questions you might have in regard to these beautiful oils. I suggest the Kit because it’s good base for your essential oil collection. However if you are looking for one or many, I can happily assist, simple or more complex, exotic or hard to find, I Am Here!

Sinuses can be so troublesome this time of year!  Here’s my trick to clear things up very effectively.

  • Fill a shot glass with hot waterlavender aromatherapy
  • Add a little sea salt and swirl until it dissolves; take 4 q-tips (2 for each nostril) and dip in sea salt saline solution
  • Insert a q-tip into each nostril and swirl around (this cleans the cilia/little nose hairs of bacteria)
  • Procedure can be repeated 4 times a day if needed; much more comfortable procedure than netti pot, and very effective in cleaning bacteria
  • Next rinse the mouth with 4 oz. of sea salt dissolved in warm water and gargle (be careful not to swallow)
  • Follow by putting 2 drops of lavender oil in your palm; dip 2 more q-tips in drops of lavender and gently swirl around inside the ears

This combination will do an amazing job of cleaning and clearing each canal!

Also Quantum Health makes a great supplement (best I’ve found) called Elderberry Immune Defense; it comes in a bottle of 60 capsules for $10. You can reach them at 1.800.448.1448 or www.quantumhealth.com.

Before buying essential oils, make sure you know the Essentials:

  • Safety Criteria for Buying Certified Essential Oil
  • 2 Never Forget Warnings for Essential Oil Usage
  • How To Know What Oil to Use for YOU!

What exactly are Essential Oils?

Essential oils are the essence of the plant. They are created either by pushing steam or boiling water through at least 20 pounds of plant material. The essential oil that was within the cellular substance of the plant, including the petal, leaf, seed, root, or bark, is then released. There are multiple ways to apply the oil through inhalation, external application with pressure point therapy and simple massage, among many others.

What should you know before buying Essential Oils?

Essential oils are found in many pharmacies, health food stores, new age stores, department stores and natural food supermarkets.  You can choose from a wide variety of brands. It is important to realize that all essential oils are not created in the same manner and are not of the same quality. Most essential oils available on the market today are not high quality products and often have little or no therapeutic value.  They either have been cut with other substances, rectified, adulterated or are partly synthetic.  Most essential oils lack information on their labels about their true content and have no guarantee about their origin and/or therapeutic value. For this reason, and to gain the most benefit from Aroma Therapy, buying only certified HEBBD (Scientific Institute of Aromatology) essential oils and consulting an Aroma Therapist is advisable.

The Three Safety Criteria for Buying Certified Essential Oil:

Before buying and using any essential oil for aromatherapy, it is vital to verify the three criteria established by the Scientific Institute Of Aromatology (INSA) that are labeled under the seal HEBBD.

  1. Beware of buying “100% pure and natural”

The term “100% pure and natural” is no longer adequate to qualify as a quality essential oil. Instead, look for the HEBBD seal. This means the oil has been Botanically and Biochemically Defined from the Botanical Species which includes gender, qualifying adjective, variety, and the producing organ (ie whole plant, flower, leaves, zest).

For example, the precise botanical species of plant used in distillation for Lavender makes a vast difference. Since Lavender has multiple species and as well as different varieties, the term “Lavender Essence” is insufficient. Each species has its own aromatic characteristic and forms a specific essence in its tissues, which in turn has various different healing qualities.

Another example would be Eucalyptus. There are hundreds of species and varieties, not all of which are aromatic.  The different species, such as Eucalyptus Globulus, Radiata, Citiodora, Polybractea, etc. each produce specific essences. It’s curative reputation in the broncho-pulmonary area are attributed to this tree based on the presence of oxcide and 1.8 cineole (formerly known as eucalptol). Globulus, Radiata, and other varieties are rich and effective, but its healing properties are absent in the Citriodora type.

2. Know which part of the plant was used

The second criteria concerns which part of the plant is used – petal, leaf, seed, root, or bark? For some “whole plant” species, such as peppermint, or rosemary, or oregano, this is not important. Yet for other species, mainly aromatic trees or bushes, you need to know the producing organ since the essence varies in terms of quality depending on what part is involved in the distillation process.

3. Verify how the plant was analyzed

Not all analysis is equal! Proper biochemical analysis is done through gas chroma-tographic and spectrometric analysis, which is listed on the label as “b.s.” or biochemical specificity.  In this analysis of all the micro-particles contained in an essential oil are examined. Some plants may contain over hundreds of components and you would want to know what is in your product.

2 Never Forget Warnings for Essential Oil Usage:

  • Keep essential oils away from eyes at all times!
  • Always dilute essential oils before using.

How To Know What Oil to use for YOU!

Sometimes it is confusing and very difficult to know which essential oil is best to use and how to apply it. It is best in these instances to consult your Aroma Therapist.

To sum up:

  • Check the label of each essential oil.

It should be labeled HEBBD, by the Scientific Institute of Aromatology and should include the botanical species, producing organ, and biochemical specificity. When you take the time to verify this information, you’ll be more likely to use an essential oil that has healing, therapeutic value!

  • Heed safety warnings
  • Consult an aromatherapist before using any essential oils.
